Student Organizations

The Latino Resource Center (LRC) is home to five Latino-based student organizations.  The LRC staff is very appreciative of the level of support it has received through the many hours of volunteer work these organizations have contributed to the Center. The following organizations invite you to  become involved.  Call the Latino Resource Center at 773-995-2526 to learn more.

OLAS: The Organization of Latin American Students was founded in 1985 by four Latino CSU students and since then it has been recognized as the most active organization of the year several times. The purpose of OLAS is to promote Latino cultural awareness throughout the community and increase the Latino population on campus. Along with organizing Cinco de Mayo every year, OLAS assists the LRC in the implementation of all cultural events. More importantly OLAS is the advocate organization for Latino students on campus.

Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. Colony at CSU was founded in the spring of 2007. It began with a group of women (sisterhood of all cultures) that exemplifies the same beliefs and principles of academics, community service, cultural awareness, social interaction and morals and ethics.  Several women of Entre Amigas later established a Colony of SLG, Inc. They are striving to further their goals by spearheading something ground-breaking and becoming the first Latina/o Greek organization in gaining chapter status at CSU.

Hermanas was founded in 2006 by a small group of Latinas.  The organization promotes the achievements of women on and off campus by providing leadership, education, motivation and support. One of their major accomplishments is  adopting a school to motivate and inspire 7th and 8th grade girls to stay in school and pursue a higher education. They are also involved in many professional development workshops, motivational seminars and Women’s History Month.

APLS, or the Association of Professional Latino Students, aims to provide all students with the support system to develop professionally, establish working relationships with organizations that promote Latino and minority advancement, and to create network opportunities between students and businesses that serve the Latino community.  APLS has been successful by taking its members to the U.S.H.L.I. Conferences and providing résumé writing workshops.

Men’s Soccer Club was established in the spring of 2006 in an effort to implement a Varsity Soccer Program at CSU.  Since then, the team has played clubs from other universities in the Chicagoland area as well as joined an indoor league in Dolton, IL.   The club is currently planning on joining the Midwest Soccer Alliance Conference which is associated with the National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association, NIRSA.
