M.S. Ed Curriculum and Instruction - Secondary Education Concentration

Degree Purpose

The purpose of the Master’s of Science in Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction is to provide extensive preparation in curriculum development, and teaching and learning strategies as part of an overall effort to improve instruction.

Concentration Goal

The Secondary Education concentration is designed for experienced teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists and educational consultants to prepare them with in-depth study and practical experience in the development of pedagogically sound curriculum and instructional programs in secondary education. This concentration places special emphasis on the study of teaching modalities, curriculum development, technology integration, integrated curriculum and collaborative inquiry.

The required course work in the Secondary Education concentration provides students with the knowledge and skills they will need to become competent teachers and curriculum specialists in the area of secondary education curriculum and instruction. This concentration also emphasizes knowledge and skill development in four areas: planning and preparation, classroom environment, curriculum and instruction, and records management.

Program Requirements

The Secondary Education Concentration requires 33 semester hours of coursework. In addition to the coursework, there are required complete program assessments such as LiveText, a Comprehensive Examand an electronic Professional Portfolio.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the university’s general requirements, the applicant must have: A. an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; B. a grade point average of 3.0 on a four-point grading system; C. two letters of recommendation from school administrators or supervisors.
